Lack
Lack of knowledge and/or research...The male protagonist who is a Montana rancher as are his descendants, says things like "peachy" or he is going to "ring his mother". The New Zealand culture and phrases were appropriate when looking from the perspective of the woman, but not a Montana rancher. When describing horseback riding it was obvious the writer did not know even the basics. No stirrups on the saddles to place your feet for mounting and balance. Having to be lifted up and then balance yourself with your thighs gripping the horse's ribs? You would have to be riding a Shetland pony to grip the animals ribs with your thighs. The whole wolf thing...Wow. I could describe the fallacies but not without giving away too much of the story.
Lack of basic editing became annoying and distracting. By the time I read smelt, instead of smelled, I was tempted to not even finish. With work, this story could have been rescued.
It is not the author's fault but, I purchased this book under a "clean romance" heading. Please be aware that there is sexual content.
9/25/14 Update..If you read the comments you will see that I have been rightly corrected on my criticism of the use of the word "smelt". I was unaware that the word is used instead of "smelled", in some cultures other than the U.S.. There were several editing errors, but apparently this was not one of them.
