Armadillo 2, Trap 0
I caught an armadillo but before I had a chance to move and release him, he released himself. The piece of metal which drops down to lock the door closed was not long enough. The armadillo banged around until it came free and he left. I figure I can bend the metal down far enough to work in the future, but I'm disappointed that the armadillo is still here tearing up my landscape.
Update: The next armadillo (or maybe the same one) completely destroyed the door. The metal rod which holds the door closed was bent out of shape and the plate that it attaches to which is glued to the door was broken loose -- either very weak glue or a very strong armadillo. I should have known that if I could bend the metal into place last time, the armadillo could bend it too.
Havahart is sending a replacement, but it remains to be seen if it will hold up better.
2019 Edit :
The replacement fared no better than the first one - completely destroyed. I went to a farmers' co-op store and found a MUCH heavier duty trap. We have caught numerous armadillos in it without any damage to the trap.
