Display Too Dim for Daytime Use
I ordered the nuvi 65 to replace a nuvi 1450 that was damaged on a trip. The 1450 has been great for us but lacked map updates and had a poor touch screen.
We found that the nuvi 65 screen is almost unusable in our cars on a sunny day while wearing sunglasses. We tried various brightness setting and even switched to night mode, which makes some text a little easier to read. My wife had even more trouble reading the display than I did. I don't know why other reviewers haven't described this problem.
After talking with Garmin customer service (very polite) I exchanged the unit through Amazon. The second unit was identical, so I figured the problem was not a fluke. A visit to Best Buy revealed that all of the new Garmins seem to have this new type of display with less contrast and/or brightness as well as graphics with less contrast. The displays look fine indoors but comparing the new units to older (nuvi 50, dezl 760) units on their shelf, the problem is clearly across the new line. We returned the second unit and have ordered a nuvi 2555 and have our fingers crossed.
I'm disappointed because otherwise, the 65 had many advantages. I liked the new display of the street you are currently on at the bottom of the screen. The nuvi 65 has a much better touch screen than the 1450. I really liked the new split-screen display, particularly with the bigger 6" display. I preferred the 1450's odd state, city, street address entry method over the new one, but I think with some experimentation the new method might have been just as good. (I disliked the 1450 method until I noted the street name search advantages.) I also missed the option of displaying several data options on the main screen at once (elevation, arrival time, etc.) but on balance I still liked the 65 more than the 1450. I hope the display problem will be solved so I can buy a nuvi 65 in the future, but as is, it would be useless to us during the day. I really would have liked the larger display if it was just as bright and clear.
Update: The map themes didn't seem to help our viewing problem much and the polarization suggestion didn't seem to help, but last year my daughter needed a navigator and the nuvi 65 met her needs best, so we tried again. The one she received has a perfectly good display that works well in all lighting. I don't know if Garmin changed the displays, the drivers, or if there is a lot of variation between units.
