Malevolent Mess Making Machine
I suppose "malevolent" isn't the best adjective since it implies an evil purpose and this machine isn't evil, just poorly designed. My first complaint about it is that the cutting mechanism is just a fixed blade that pierces the lid and cuts it as the can rotates under it. This produces a very ragged, wavy edge to the lid. My old can opener had a rotating circular blade which produced a much more even and smooth edge. I haven't cut my fingers yet but it seems like it would be easier to do on the ragged edge. My second complaint is probably a result of that fixed blade. Just as the cut is about to be completed, the lid tilts to the right and dips into the contents of the can. Then, as the cut is completed, it suddenly tilts level again and flings part of the contents across the counter. This isn't as noticeable when the contents are more solid, such as canned beans, but is pretty messy when opening a can of liquid, such as chicken broth. Also, when the contents are all liquid, the lid is usually not caught by the magnet and has to be fished out of the can. This can opener is going in my next yard sale while I continue to search for a better replacement for my old Rival can opener.
