I enjoyed reading through this with my children until we flipped to the page about Native Americans. The book erroneously states that the Native American population was reduced to 400,000 as a result of disease. Now I get that the book isn’t going to talk about rape, torture, and murder. But to state that the Native American population decreased from 50 MILLION to 400 THOUSAND from diseases is FACTUALLY MISLEADING. If they had just bypassed the genocide of Native Americans, I would have been very frustrated but not surprised since most of the information is very surface. But if they are going to talk about why the population was reduced so dramatically, then they should find a way to be honest as opposed to sharing straight up misinformation by excluding other KEY facts. I can’t rely on this book to teach my children FACTS, which is why I bought it. We know that there are conspiracy theorists who believe that no Native Americans were intentionally harmed during colonization. We know that people still question the holocaust. These are not political arguments up for debate, these are matters of history and we happen to have plenty of documentation to prove that both of these atrocities took place. I am not asking that the publishers share an opinion about the genocide of Native Americans. I am asking that they not reduce their near-erasure to disease alone. If the publishers don’t have the courage to share facts in a book designed to educate children, it calls into question information on every other subject in the book. I plan to return it. Oh. The layout is fine and the book arrived in good condition.
