Disappointing
This book seemed to have an interesting plot but as a "Regency murder mystery & romance" it disappoints on a number of fronts.
Firstly, the murder mystery occurs right at the end and therefore represents only the smallest part of the story, although I admit once it did take place it was the only reason I continued to read the book till the end - just to confirm the identity of the murderer.
Secondly, the romance aspect was entirely glossed over. Although there are two romances in the story, the first is totally unrealistic as there appears to be no chemistry or connection between the affianced couple despite each believing they are in love with the other. The second side-romance occurs later in the story and is equally unbelieaveable.
Finally, I was once again let down by the "Regency" aspect of the story. The writer has failed to capture the essence of the Regency era which has been so well depicted by other authors. I can't imagine someone knitting a "sweater" during the Regency era. Would the English have even called it a sweater? Correct me if I am wrong, but this seemed unlikely to me. Also, it is my understanding that a Duke was referred to as "Your Grace" not "My Lord". Perhaps I am being pedantic but I love Regency stories and these blaring errors ruin the whole effect as far as I am concerned. If you are going to set your story in a particular era, you should do your homework and get the details correct.
