I asked and no one seems to understand that the wood surface is veneer. What I mean by veneer is this: The acacia wood is NOT solid all the way through. It's built in layers, and the top layers are maybe a quarter of an inch thick. The surface of the wood is very rough in several places, very uneven, and gouged and even completely split. Where it's split, they actually glued it back together to save money. The ends of the long boards, where they meet the end pieces that butt up against them, there's a quarter inch gap there, and you can see the veneer's thickness and another board that meets up with the end piece. It's a seam that shouldn't have this gap, where water can sit and work its way under the veneer. What I received does NOT come close to the quality people are describing in their reviews. The packaging was excellent, the metal legs are hollow but the construction is very solid and the assembly very easy. But the most important part of the bench, the wood, is terrible. I'm very disappointed. Amazon is sending UPS to come get the assembled bench and they're sending me a replacement. I sure hope the new one is better quality. I'm very upset about this.
