OK, so I really like Toto toilets. I have bought a few over the years. So, I never expected to be bit by getting one with a manufacturing defect. Based on past experience, I without hesitation bought one for a bathroom remodel. It worked great. Unfortunately, it turned out to have a defect that took a long time to manifest and then notice - longer than the 1 year manufacturer warrantee. When we first noticed it, there was a very small amount of water behind the toilet. At first I though it was because the tank was not seated properly. After investigating over several days, though, there was never any water where the tank connects to the bowl. Instead the water came from a completely unexpected source. There is a hollow space between the inside and outside of the bowl. There are two weep holes, one at each back corner, under the rim. These weep holes allow the hollow space to breathe. Over time, water apparently leaked into the hollow part from the water channels internal to the bowl. Eventually enough water leaked into the hollow part that it started to sporadically drip from one of the weep holes. This could only happen due to a manufacturing defect. We contacted Amazon. The usual return policy is that you have to return what you bought, then get a replacement. However, this is a used toilet we're talking about. Also, we can't just leave the bathroom without a toilet. Eventually we worked out an arrangement where we purchased a replacement from Amazon first, then installed it, then shipped back the defective one. Amazon contacted the manufacturer, but they wouldn't stand behind their product. Yes, I know warrantee, blah blah blah, but this is an obvious manufacturing defect in a non wear part. Despite this, Amazon made the decision to make things right with us. We didn't get a 100% refund, but their solution was fair and beyond their stated policy. So, I give Amazon 5 stars for handling this. I give Toto 1 star for not.
