An aggregation of Mediocre ! So dissapointed
I wanted to love this watch but it just isn't ready for prime time yet. The truth is 1/2 the complaints i'm about to list are Android Wear related however the watch relies on it to run so here goes.
First off; he Good:
The watch is 'hands down' the most beautiful android wear watch on the market. I work in the mobile software space and have had a chance to hold all the current devices and this one wins the style and feel by a mile. The packaging and configuration of the product was pretty straightforward and went without too many issues.
Now; the Bad ( grab a coffee there is a lot of bad ) :
This device (and Android wear) does nothing better than the device it tries to replace/emulate...
1) As a watch it isn't very good. It gets annoying that the time is not always displaying. When you look at the watch the time comes on in a split second, but over time it gets really frustrating and sometimes you have to flick your wrist more than once to turn it on. So it’s not a great watch
2) If you are connected to your phone and you use this device for anything more than telling time, the watch lasts less than 10 hours. The best I’ve gotten is 12 ish hours.... Having your watch die at 6 pm forces you to use your phone as a clock which defeats the purpose, and because it requires a special charger, I can't even recharge it at the office... This is a huge ‘fail’ in my opinion.
3) As a notification and email device it is nowhere near as useful as your phone which is likely in your pocket or within reach... so why would i squint or use the awkward user interface to read the subject of my email and be forced to read the rest of the email on my phone anyway.... so that is a fail too.
So at this point I was thinking to myself , Ok this is not going to replace my regular watch, it isn't going to replace my phone for quick checking of email and messages... The good news is that I’m a triathlete and I’m always looking for a better sports watch for when I’m training and I thought this would be the 'killer use case' for me .....
WRONG! As a sports watch this is where this devices fails the most.... Here is why.....
1) all the sports apps ( Strava, Endomondo and more ) that I tried with this device drained the battery in less than 2 hours and my average bike ride is closer to 3 hours..... Huge Fail again.
2) I thought, alright, forget all that and I’ll use it as a heart rate monitor to get rid of that nasty strap around my chest.... WRONG AGAIN!! The heart rate monitor requires you to be perfectly still... This defeats the purpose entirely ... i don't care about my heart rate at rest.... it doesn't work while running or even being still while riding the bike... It is super flaky.... so I figured I’d use it to take my heart rate at stoplights.... WRONG!!! it doesn't work if you have any sweat or perspiration on your wrist... so the heart rate monitor is obviously made for folks who are trying to measure how much their heart rate increased at the office when they had to walk to the kitchen to grab another doughnut and not for anyone doing sports.
So In a nutshell:
This device is an aggregation of mediocre, it’s mediocre at telling time, it’s mediocre for peeking at your messages, it’s flat out horrible for your Heart rate and the apps so far are mostly bad as well…
But to end on a positive note…. It is gorgeous
PS: Motorola, I had your MotoActv sports watch years ago, and it was better than this thing….
