★★☆☆☆
It works, but...
Let me start by saying the BlackVue camera systems are arguably the best dash cams made, period.
This accessory, however, is required for the new “X” series cameras to connect to the cloud, and I have the 900X, top of the line.
The only carriers in the US that work with this are Sprint/T-Mobile or AT&T. Verizon will not work.
The data plans on all the other carriers are expensive for a reasonable amount of data. The least expensive is T-Mobile at $10 a month for a 2GB prepaid plan, and a one time charge of $10 to buy the SIM card. This solution did not work well for me. The camera would constantly “flap”, disconnecting and reconnecting numerous times throughout the day and night. I believe it is due to poor quality reception in my area for T-Mobile. The T-mobile plan also only has 2GB per month total (cuts you off if you run out), and that is BARELY enough to last the entire month with extremely light usage of remote connectivity. If you like checking up on the camera on a fairly regular basis, 2GB is not enough.
So instead, since I already have a Verizon account on my cell phone, I added a Verizon wifi hotspot “puck” that I plugged into the USB port on the B124-X battery pack accessory I bought with the camera, and used the WIFI cloud option on the camera instead of this 4G LTE accessory. Now it works perfectly, and I get unlimited data (15GB LTE, then 600kbbs unlimited after that - it resets monthly) and only costs $10 a month. The upside to doing it this way is then you have a dedicated WIFI network in your car to use with any other devices.
All this said, I took three stars away from what should have been a perfect review:
One minus star because the system should support Verizon (and other carriers using similar frequencies), another minus star because this accessory is more expensive than buying a “puck” for WIFI, and finally minus a third star because this functionality should have been built-into the camera itself like some of the other lesser models of BlackVue cameras. How hard would it have been to incorporate the sim chip into the camera itself instead of this external wired mess?
In fairness, your mileage may vary with T-Mobile or using other non-Verizon (or global) carriers in your area, but it did not work well for me.
Considering the fact that you can use ANY carrier on the planet via a lesser-expensive (and cleaner install) 4G/5G WIFI hotspot puck, and the added benefit of having dedicated internet WIFI, I’m sadly compelled to give this device only 2 stars, and recommend you go the “puck” route instead.
I hope this review helps you make a more educated decision with your own setup situation.
