... years ago and got a couple of years of good service out of it
I bought one of these radios about four years ago and got a couple of years of good service out of it. I live in a marginal reception area for the FM radio station I most want to listen to, and the unit had good sensitivity and selectivity in that band. I also enjoyed picking up overseas shortwave stations. All well and good until the tuning failed. Set it for a station and it would stay there for a few minutes, but then the tuning would begin drifting down (always down, for some reason) by some random amount every few minutes. Obviously, this made the radio useless since you couldn't listen to anything unless you wanted to sit there and re-adjust the tuning every three or four minutes. It was long out of warranty by that time, and I couldn't find anyone local who would work on it, so I decided to replace it. Every manufacturing process produces a few defective products, right? I assumed I'd just been unlucky. Surely this was a one-time thing.
So I bought another one. This time I got a little less than two years of good service out of it, but imagine my reaction when the second unit began doing the exact same thing! Neither unit was dropped, exposed to extreme heat or cold, or otherwise abused, so there's no excuse for this repeated failure. Clearly this was not some random manufacturing defect; it was a design choice.
Once again, for the third time in less than five years, I'm shopping for an expensive radio. I don't know what I'm going to buy this time, but it won't be a Sangean.
