Just too much proprietary nonsense
There's just too much proprietary nonsense going on with this device. I'm somewhat fed up with Amazon as a platform for anything, but this Fire tablet really take the cake.
The Amazon app store is super limited in its offerings. Most people just add the Google Play store to get around this, but half of the Play apps don't quite work correctly (such as not rotating from landscape to portrait view when you turn the tablet).
Kindle store's nonsense goes into overdrive with this device as well. Background: I read Japanese, I have had to go through insane lengths to get Japanese books onto any Kindle reader (cloud or otherwise). Amazon has document upload, but it's limited to Mobi files, and for Japanese it essentially ruins the format of most Mobi files you would want to send. What makes it worse is that if you buy the books from the Amazon store, there are limits on everything from highlighting text to copying & pasting. Amazon decided that none of the popular flashcard apps are worth using. Instead, they force you into their own garbage flashcard app if you want to make a flashcard out of a new word that you don't know. If you want to get around any of that, you essentially have to pirate a Kindle-friendly Mobi file (for a book you've paid for) and it still probably won't work. Oh, and if you have any custom dictionaries - because the offerings in the Amazon store are pretty useless for grammar & conjugation, forget this device. If you manage to get the dictionaries onto the device, the reader app on this device will even refuse to recognize them as dictionaries. FYI this nonsense with the dictionaries doesn't happen on any other form of Kindle reader or device.
The above 2 situations create the perfect storm of ridiculousness. In order to read Japanese books, you have to get a Japanese Amazon account. If you log into the device with a Japanese Amazon account, most of your apps go away because they don't even offer most of the apps from the US store in the Japanese store. All of this effort for books that are highly restricted and/or are likely not to work anyway.
I've wasted so many hours of my life trying to get this tablet to work it's insane. I should send Amazon a bill. Not to mention the fact that they dropped the price $80 a week or two after I purchased two of the devices...
TLDR Final statement: Get any other android tablet other than this one. Apps will work better on any other device. Even Amazon apps will work better on any other device (such as Kindle reader, Audible, etc). It is not worth the money, the time, the hassle, or the pain.
