Great ideas couples with the absolute worst execution + Showrunners Moral/Ethical improprieties make support impossible. Hubris.
First off a short review of the first two seasons. Season 1: Starts out as your run of the mill post apocalyptic teen drama. But once you push past about four episodes things start to pick up, moral dilemmas abound and everyone is forced to grow in the fight for survival. Season 2: The world widens, grows richer and choices and consequences get harder. The actors are in top form and by the end of the season The 100 is clearly the most underrated shown on television and arguably one of the best period. The cast is superb particularly Eliza Taylor as Clarke, Lindsey Morgan as Raven and Alycia Debnam-Carey as the show stealer Commander Lexa. I highly suggest following these women wherever they go Between Seasons 2 & 3 the showrunners blatantly lie to their fans to drum up social media support. They infiltrate forums specifically set aside for LGBT people and call fans worried about the well known Bury Your Gays/ Dead Lesbian Trope, call anyone who has legitimate fears crazy and says they should seek counselling for their trust issues. The characters death had already been filmed at that point. Said person who did this then tracked down a person who confronted the showrunner at a convention to a bathroom and cornered them in a conversation for over 25 minutes, what becomes clear is that she had been made a scapegoat for Jason Rothenberg. All of this has been documented online. Simply search for "LGBT Fans Deserve Better" and it'll be one of it not the top result. Season 3: Someone in this mess there is a good, potentially excellent season. What we get instead is one of the best examples of a showrunners hubris. Hubris is defined as excessive pride or self-confidence and described on wikipedia as " 'pride that blinds', as it often causes a committer of hubris to act in foolish ways that belies common sense" To quote Jason Rothenberg himself "“You guys I just had an idea that is either the most ridiculous, shark-jumping idea of all time and I will be done with the show and they’ll fire me, or it’s brilliant.” Sadly is was the former. also sadly at the time of writing he had not been fired. If he is while I can not recommend this season I may be able to recommend the next. Even then the show might have been saved from the horrible initial idea if the writing had been good, but it wasn't. Storylines were nonsensical, rushed and poorly plotted. Nominally good actors like Bob Morley struggled as their character motivations were trashed and character growth completely destroyed. Once again Eliza Taylor as Clarke, Lindsey Morgan as Raven and Alycia Debnam-Carey as Commander Lexa steal the show but this time they can not save it. Even knowing that their are 5 more hours of show left I can confidently say that Season 3 of The 100 is an easy one star reviews. No matter how good the DVD set itself is, technical qualities or the extremely unlikely possibility of the remaining episodes being decent can save this season of the show. Indeed it seems Jason Rothenberg has murdered a promising show in it's prime and while we will mourn what could have been at least we had seasons 1+2. May We Meet Again
