Publisher and fact checkers should be fired
Wow. I am so confused by the accolades for this book. Trying to avoid spoilers, I'll say one positive thing: It inspired me to do a lot of research. For example, did you know that HR departments didn't really exist in the 50's/60's? This book envisages HR departments as if they were smack out of modern times; original HR departments were developed as a way to communicate with unions. Small spoiler: this book envisages an HR department with a repellent woman who (I am not making this up, this author wrote (and the publisher let this go:) "Personnel never comments on an employee's appearance" ... and recheck the date this supposedly happened. (Setting is 1952 people!!! Please just re-watch Mad Men omg have your brains all turned to mush?)
Hey did you know people didn't start saying "Geez Louise" until the '90s?? But you still love this book right. Sigh. How do people not find this jolting? Don't you want to be transported by a book? How can this possibly do that for you?
Readers. We live in an age where I thought Neil DeGrasse Tyson's videos with Chaser the Border Collie went so viral that people might have an idea what a smart dog is like (oh gosh and Neil's delight is so utterly wonderful. Look that up. But you all drink from the firehose and accept this book with its perfect, beautiful, woman scientist (with actually no true interest in actual animal behavior) and have no problem that she teaches her stray dog words ... ouch it hurts to type this .... by pointing at pictures in a book. She teaches the dog ... by pointing at pictures in a book. You like this. There's a lot Chase could do and he and his owners are fascinating. But then watch again and tell me whether you think a stray terrier could learn words ... by watching someone point to pictures in a book (ouch). What exactly is Elizabeth doing to reinforce? HMMMM?
I could go back to all my notes but it hurts too much to think that this book is supposed to be about smart women and ... well
Why.
