Awful story that teaches the WRONG Message!!
This book was on all of the top reading lists so we got it for our daughter for Valentine’s Day. However, we will NEVER be reading it to her. This book teaches children the wrong idea of looks, beauty, and love. The book is about a monster that isn’t cute and no one wants to love him based on his looks, but everyone wants the cute, cuddly animals. As I was reading I was hoping the lesson would go on to show how we shouldn’t judge on looks and instead on someone’s inner values, and how the person treats people. NOPE in the end the monster only has someone love him because he finds another monster that looks like just like him. Awful! We don’t have to look like someone to love them or find them cute. Nor should we be basing our love or friendship on what someone looks like! Books that reinforce this horrible ideology have no business being read to children. I’m a teacher and I see children deal with self-esteem, comparison, bullying issues every day. We need books and our culture to be better than this!
