Caution Deceptive Advertising According To Presto Customer Support
Just a note of caution about how this item is being marketed. The description says that it's a "ceramic" cooking surface, which is probably something you care about if you're buying this item. After receiving a note from Presto support (search questions/answer section on this page), they verified that this item is indeed free of PFOA but it does in fact contain PTFE. PTFE (brand name Teflon) is a generally non-reactive polymer (plastic) that is used in non-stick materials. Up until around 2015 the chemical PFOA was used as a binding agent to make the Teflon (PTFE) stick to metal baking surfaces. PFOA is relatively unstable but most of it is supposed to "burn off" during the production process, although traces would still be found in most Teflon appliances and could easily get into your food/body. Now, many cookware items (like this product) are advertised as PFOA free... but most of these items still contain PTFE (they just use a substitute binding agent/process in place of the PFOA). PTFE is not heat stable... it breaks down and releases toxic fumes when heat gets high enough. The exact temperatures are debated. Dupont, the company that makes Teflon, claims it's around 450 or 500 degrees, however, there are are documented cases of birds dying when exposed to PTFE fumes as low as 350 degrees. Dupont has been the subject of lawsuits regarding the use of this material. If you have birds, care about your health (PTFE/PFOA have been classified as probable cancer causing agents) or truthful advertising, I would skip this product. Amazon offers a ceramic griddle by Oster that is advertised as PFOA AND PTFE free. I'd give that one a try.
