Great idea...major problem...Or is it?
I purchased this particular product for my cats to use as I like the idea of the UV purification, and was ready to try something I didn't have to fill everyday. There are some pros, and some cons.
Pro's: Its Quiet, its pretty(fits nicely in corners and matches contemporary decors), it has an automatic shut off when it gets low.
Con's: the only con I have found is a major one. I am not sure if its the UV light or the pump but the water temperature sits at 5-6 degress above room temperature. My cat's refuse to use it unless I put ice in the water to cool it down. For those of you with cats that like to drink from ceramic bowls(typically keeps water temperature 3-5 degrees below room temperature) will most likely only stare at this little fountain.
My cats do enjoy watching it, and are fascinated with the lighted fountain. I did not however buy this for aesthetics. I have decided to toy around with different things to see if I can get the water temperature down, but for now this is nothing more than an expensive ambiance piece.
(Update)1-30-2013:
After receiving a response from a member of the company, and doing a little tinkering, I have decided to provide an update on my findings. The fountain does consistently test at a higher temperature than the same volume of water contained in a ceramic bowl. This should not be suprising as ceramic is a more efficient heat distributor than plastic. I also compared to a metal bowl which actually was between the two. We still see that while a ceramic bowl maintained the temperature slightly below room temperature (67), and the metal bowl at room temperature (71) the UV spa was still higher than room temperature (73). I agree with the company response in that it is not the design or make up of the fountain, as a comparable sized plastic bowl also maintained a higher than room temperature reading. What does this mean? Well it depends on your cat. After leaving the fountain out for a couple of weeks I did find that the cats started to use it, but they also wanted their ceramic water bowl from time to time as well. This could just be the behavior of my cats. I did read that cats will often seek different temperature waters based on their body temperatures, but cannot say one way or the other, that is what is going on here. By buying a 4 dollar marble tile from Home Depot, and placing the UV fountain on said marble I was able to get the water much closer to room temperature. I did notice the cats using the fountain much more consistently now, but I do still allow them access to a ceramic bowl in a different location. They use both. So what is the bottom line?
If I had to make the purchase again I certainly would, as the fountain is easy to setup, and use. I think my cats would have liked it better if it were ceramic, or metal. Let's be honest though it would have upped the price point quite a bit. Like many cat products you should consider your cat's behaviors and personality before making a purchase like this. If the cats refuse to drink from plastic containers it could be difficult to convince them to drink from this fountain.
Final Update 7-15-2013:
After months of testing out this unit I have finally put its use to an end. The unit's fountain motor was consistently getting plugged up, and it was too difficult to keep it clear. The many interlocking components were getting more frustrating to keep clean, and the motor was consistently getting blocked up. When any blockage occurs the water stream loses its consistency and splashes the water reservoir. This splashing caused water to get all over my hardwood floor and created a real nuisance. This despite the fact that I have it mounted on top of a large piece of marble (see temperature issues above) I really wanted to like this unit, but after all the issues I couldn't keep using it. The final straw was when we identified that the more finicky cat (Willow) had stopped using the fountain after the first blockage occurred. I'm guessing it splashed her, and she had enough. So have I.
