Privilege can be defined not only in color...but as LOVE.
Another example of people who continue the separation and not the mending of what is needed for our children. I am an immigrant who came from Europe when I was 10 years old. While my skin, according to this new "White Privilege" mentality might have made a difference, the reality is quite the opposite. We had no knowledge of the English language, the American culture, nor understood why these differences seemed to matter. The ideas of racism were unknown to me at the time, as I came from a country where these things did not matter. Privileged? Yes I was extremely privileged. I had a mother and a father who loved us, cared for us, we were 5 siblings who loved one another. We had little, as we lived in an old tenement building in the South Bronx. We were poor, there was little money coming in and my father refused to go on any social program, welfare or public assistance. They taught us to love everyone,to be proud of ourselves and most of all, TO BE NICE. My dad once said, "All the people were here before us, regardless of their color or religion, treat them with respect and respect is what will come in your favor." Perhaps the book should have included, brown cars, pink cars and other colors as well. The author mentioned them at the beginning, but failed to put them all in the race. All she did was put Black against White and White against Black. The story is a terrible way to teach children about becoming better with each other, it is most definitely a story of racism without hope, not of privilege. Life was not about black and white for us. Life was about hard work, perseverance, sacrifice, and yes....learning about imperfection, unfairness, the real stories of racism, some which also affected us in the reverse. Maybe I should write a book myself and talk about, "The Privilege of Love", for that is the only way to teach our children about their future and their own joy and happiness.
