★★☆☆☆
This novel fully held me -- until "the twist" two-thirds into the book
I really cared about the characters in this novel, Chloe, Gabriel and Emma. The continuing relationships were being developed quite well. I started caring for all three more and more. Yes, the techniques the author used took a bit of getting used to -- two characters in first-person point-of -view, and one in third-person. And I love French literature, life and country. That’s why I chose this novel and because of the editorial reviews.
I don’t want to give any of the plot away. I was two-thirds (65%) into the book, imagining the characters as real people and getting to live their lives vicariously. The tension and conflict produced by the believable plot and interactions up to this point held me reading with expectation.
BUT THEN – I felt punk'd, taken in by a scam, a twist in the plot I found manipulative. And it turned out to be just that. I would rather have seen the relationships develop in a more believable manner. There was really no planting, no preparation for such a deus ex machina twist. I felt cheated. Oh, it’s a clever twist but highly unbelievable. And for me it really destroys the worth of two of the characters I had grown to care about and living their lives vicariously. Fortunately, the dog remained faithful!
