The Sentimentality Made Me Nauseous
This book isn't for those who simply want to learn more about factory farming from a neutral, knowledgeable point of view. There is a decent amount of information about factory farming but the dilettante author's lack of expert knowledge makes the book seem like a bloated persuasive essay written by a high school English student; especially with the inane personal stories about his grandmother whom he decided to make the motif of this book for reasons I do not comprehend. I don't even understand why the title of the book is "Eating Animals" if the author's supposed purpose is to spread awareness about the conditions in factory farms and not to advocate vegetarianism. The most probable reason is because the targeted audience IS vegetarians and their sympathizers (I consider myself one) which is why the book is more concerned with appealing to emotion than with concisely giving information on factory farming. It's irritating waddling through pages of the author begging us to imagine ourselves as if we were chickens or giving us fun facts about pigs such as "they enjoy playing video games". Is this really relevant? If an animal feels pain or anxiety then it is already unethical to subject them to the conditions of factory farms and the rest is superfluous. Since, for example, a crocodile or a rabbit does not play video games or do other things that make them seem "more human" is it ok to treat them inhumanely? It's this excessive sentimentality, his awkward prose, and his general arrogance that make Eating Animals hard to read, even for those who are already on his side. The Author is not a scientist or an expert on animals, farming, or business so the book is all second-hand information which could've been presented by a more intelligent writer whose main objective would be to inform readers and not to guilt them into vegetarianism (might as well grab a PETA pamphlet and waste less time and no money). Preferrably this other writer would also not waste our time by mentioning his grandmother a dozen times, his dog, or stories about his on-again, off-again vegetarianism.
