"WITH 1,100 NEW RECIPES"-----WHERE ???????
I pre-ordered this book last summer partially based on the the book cover which clearly states "1,100 new recipes". My copy arrived this week and I have been trying to find any recipe NOT PREVIOUSLY PUBLISHED in the edition(s) of "The New Family Cookbook", "The Cook's Illustrated Cookbook", or "The Cook's Country Cookbook". Americas Test Kitchen (aka) Cook's Illustrated (aka) Cook's Country are well know for using recipes over and over in "new" publications. I made several comparisons and can't find any recipe not previously published or not available on-line at their website(s). I don't have a problem with this approach as it is not plagerism in the true sense, but to have the cover indicate 1,100 new recipes seems rediculous. Even many of the pictures are the same as in the "Cooking School" cookbook! I have used many of the recipes from this "group", and most of them are quite satisfactory--even some have become family favorites. So I am not going to review the contents of the book as they probably have been previously reviewed in numerous publications. But would the editor(s) please tell me where the 1,100 new recipes are located? The preface (page IX) says the book "CONTAINS 1,356 RECIPES, INCLUDING 1,139 NEW RECIPES FOR THIS REVISED EDITION". If my math is correct, that means only 217 of the total are not NEW! It's not worth my time but I know there are more than 217 recipes that are not new. Just looking at the salad section, I guess "Classic Egg Salad" is different from "Classic Egg Salad" in the old book is that the new publication calls for only 6 eggs compared to the original 12 eggs. Same EXACT ingredients, different proportions!! Compare the Blue Cheese Dressing--exact same ingredients--different amounts of each. And the Creamy Garlic Dressing, Thousand Island Dressing and the Ranch Dressing are exactly the same in both editions. And check out the the Tortellini Salad with Asparagus with Basil Vinaigrette with the old Tortellini Salad with Asparagus and FRESH Basil Vinaigrette! Exactly the same amount of each ingredient---just a "NEW" title! And the now "Classic" Three-Bean Salad is obviously NEW because the new book calls for "canola" oil in stead of "vegetable" oil----same amount of all ingredients. What a way to call it new? Add the "Classic" title and use canola oil instead of vegetable oil! How creative! Other recipes contain slight modifications from the previous publication! Maybe the "BEST RECIPE" published a few years ago was not the "BEST RECIPE" after all. It does have a nice cover but the best part is that most recipes are on the same (or facing) page(s). You don't have to turn the page back and forth to finish the recipe. Nothing new to see here--please move on!
