Junk. Total. Junk.
Why, given all of the technology at our fingertips, do sound machine manufacturers continue to make crappy machines? WHY?! This one, which seemed so promising, features a faulty volume knob that, after about a month of use, causes the volume to randomly drop out. You have to press it while you twist to recontact the soldering inside. Junk. UPDATE: 19Sept2014 After fruitless searches for a replacement with positive reviews and a reasonable price, I finally took apart this device to repair it. The volume knob problem is the result of insulating material that gets smeared across a conductive disc every time the knob is turned. If you choose to take this apart to repair it as I did, the job involves a small Phillips screwdriver, a butter knife, and a Q-Tip. FIRST, UNPLUG THE DEVICE! There is a total of 9 screws: 4 on the outer cover, 4 that fasten the circuit board of interest, and one hidden inside the volume knob cover. Once you get the volume knob assembly out, you must pry off the top of the knob (I used a butter knife). Unscrew the hidden screw within that and the assembly will pop apart to reveal a little disc, upon which the conductive "rake" glides across. You will notice the smear lines. Use the Q-Tip to rub them off (you should see black grime on the Q-Tip). Twist the conductor to reach as much area as possible. Carefully reassemble the device and enjoy the now-working volume knob. DISCLAIMER 1: Repair at your own risk. I have a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, and while this is certainly an amateur handyman job, don't get yourself shocked or burn down your home or further ruin your device and blame me. :-) I'm not an amateur handyman. I repeat: repair at your own risk. DISCLAIMER 2: It is my suspicion, due to the poor design of this volume knob, this repair will need to be repeated every 6-9 months. I really hope I'm wrong. Enjoy!
