I had forgotten why I had trouble with the first Season. The first three episodes in the second reminded me quickly. The acting is wonderful and the subject matter compelling. The tempo is good, the costume design and music wonderful. But one must care about the characters to enjoy a show. I find nearly every character overly self-indulgent, self-absorbed, and I sadly don't care about them (or wish to see them self-destruct anymore). I care about Maura and she represents the best thread in this familial patchwork of story lines. Her incremental transformations and glimpses into her new world are powerful, but these are fleeting and lost amid the nauseous twists and turns of her family.
