I've had this tree not quite six months. While the cats really loved it, it just now splintered apart from the top and broke, with one cat climbing on the top level, and the other below that. One was slightly hurt, both are really spooked. In observing the construction, the area that anchors to the metal post is of a cheap particle board that for whatever reason just tore apart when a nine pound cat jumped on it. This is not sturdy and not safe, and I'm really upset that my cats were injured and scared by shoddy construction. Very, very upset. Update to the review: the company was kind enough to send another top perch, and said that the problem was very rare, and that the designers were addressing the issue...so, they are responsive and kind, and I do appreciate that. However, after reinstalling, I just no longer felt confident about it, plus the cats have not gone near that area since the accident. Therefore, since they're now frightened of the product, and I feel paranoid about it too, we have discontinued its use entirely. A real shame. I'm currently seeking a solid wood replacement, locally crafted. The makers were very nice about this, but ultimately the risk was not worth it. I do however feel it would be perfectly safe for small kittens.
