Disingenuous and Lazy Scholarship
Every now and again a member of a certain American evangelical sect will be dispatched to share the thoughts of the body on the latest societal shifts. 'Faultlines' is this project. It is a masterpiece of socio-religious spin.
This work is disingenuous. Like an apprentice of Sheev Palpatine, Baucham manipulates the arguments of his opposition in a manner that best serves his deserved ends without actually engaging and citing critical works and points of view with integrity and thoughtfulness.
Muddled with poor, and in some cases unsubstantiated claims, a mark of lazy scholarship, Baucham makes little to no effort to clearly define the terms he is attempting to dismantle. Instead, Baucham negotiations his concerns with the balletic choreography and grace of Bull in an antique store. In the mere span of the first five pages the reader will find this work richly lathered with systemic contradictions.
This work is disturbing. Case after case is made that gives comfort, justification, and sanctuary to the senseless killings of unarmed African American men, women, and children. In doing so however, the writer succeeds in making the case that America indeed has a serious policing problem. This was undoubtedly unintended.
This book is deceptive. The author regurgitates the echo chamber talk of his sect. Drawing from an amalgamation of dated propaganda, Cold War Era rhetoric, and exaggerated unpersuasive arguments of fear, the writer will no doubt stir both a bizarre joy and philosophical panic in the religious minds of those who already lean the direction of his views.
With the concentration and depth of a Sarah Palin essay, flawed lines best describes this otherwise highly undistinguished and subjective work. If you have an allergic reaction to integritous, redemptive, and well researched scholarship, your immune system will not be triggered by this literary minstrel show.
