Top Coat ruined my transformation
I was quite disappointed with the cabinet transformation product. I will list both the positives and negatives about my experience. I read several reviews regarding this product so I put in a lot of thought before the purchase. First, I really did like the quality of the base coat and how it applied smoothly to my laminate cabinets. I was very impressed how the entire project was turning out. I used the deglosser that came with the kit and i really scrubbed away. My cabinets were not in the greatest shape. Structurally, they were sound. However, years of grime and grease were very apparent. I was excited to apply the base coat once i prepped all of my cabinets. This step also went extremely well and I was truly excited as I neared the finish line. However, this is where the positives stop for me. In fact, I feel the final step ruined the complete and timely makeover process. I read plenty of reviews about how bad the top coat is. I also read some reviews advising it isn't that bad. I wish I would have listened to the negative comments regarding the top coat. I truly loved my cabinets until applying the top coat. I watched the video that came with the kit. The man on the video makes the application of the top coat look simple. Well, it just isn't! I also watched online videos from past customers, read reviews, etc. I debated on just applying a 3rd party top coat, but I used the provided top coat instead. This was a huge mistake! It ruined everything for me. My cabinets are full of ugly streaks all over them. Trust me when I say I attempted to follow the instructions and over prepare myself before applying this final step. The top coat dries so fast and if you happen to go over a little area that you already applied, you will have horrible streaks. I tried different methods on different cabinets just to see if I could make it look presentable. I failed, but more importantly I believe the top coat failed me. This wasn't something that I just rushed through or didn't attempt to prepare for. Now every time I walk into my kitchen I just get disgusted. I am going to have to sand off the top coat at some point, reapply another bond coat, and then find a suitable top coat that I can work with. I truly wish I would have just used a different top coat. I am at a loss with this product. I also did the sandstone rustoleum countertop transformation kit and that went AWESOME!!! I followed those directions just as I did with the cabinet transformation. However, they turned out differently. I would give cabinets a 3 out of 10 and the countertops 11/10...i was hesitant to complete the countertop after I saw how the cabinets turned out. I am glad I just said the heck with it and tried it. I love my countertops but dislike my cabinets....i guess 1 for 2 isn't bad...so my advice to anyone is basically the same advice I was reading before my cabinet transformation. Beware of the provided top coat that comes with the kit...do your homework..i have done many projects in my home over the past 11 years, so this couldn't all be just "user error." i accept some of the blame I guess, but definitely not even most of it...The color tone of the expresso base coat was awesome. I am just at a loss for what the final product turned out to be. notice the streaks on the cabinets in the provided photos...again, i love the countertop, but the cabinets fell short. so in the end i guess i would recommend this product minus the top coat. hope this helps someone out there....
