One Weak Point
This Sony A5100 is a good camera with one very serious flaw. The technical details are all spot on. It can take stunning photos under many conditions and of course the Sony E-Mount Lenses are fantastic. The real deal-breaker on this small box is the LCD. First, even though it is advertised as being a "touch screen", please do not be fooled. It is nothing like the touch screen you are accustomed to on your smart phone. You need to push the enter button to make choices and use the dial to rotate through choices. It is possible to set the screen to be used with touch to establish point of focus but in my experience this was hit-and-miss at best. Alternatively the "touch" might be used for the shutter but if you think that poking the back of a camera to take a picture doesn't jog a hand-held shot, you either have much steadier hands than I or are not trying to take first class photos. The safest route is to rely on the normal shutter button. The really glaring error is that the display, even at the very highest brightness setting, is no where near bright enough to see in sunlight. Inside it is fine. Outside in the shade is usually okay. In direct sunlight you can't see anything of the screen, meaning you can't properly frame the picture nor adjust the focus since you can't even see the details of the shot! This poor quality LCD is not anywhere near the resolution of a high-end smartphone display. This baby is crippled by its poor quality LCD. Please, if you want to take good photos outside, do yourself a favor and purchase a Sony which has an Electronic View Finder (EVF). That is the only way to get around this problem. Take a look at the A6000, for example. Sorry Sony but you have really disappointed me with this slick little box that isn't really usable in a sunny outside environment.
Update: I sadly decided to return the A5100 and bought an A6000 in exchange. What a difference just $50 makes. The Electronic View Finder (EVF) is incredible. All the information related to each shot is inside the view like a heads-up display. I miss the 180 degree flip-up rotation of the LCD that the A5100 has but I take few selfies and can use a cellphone as a remote through the wi-fi. It is easy to take excellent quality photos in all lighting conditions with the A6000, and the camera body (silver metal frame) feels much sturdier and looks higher quality. So very happy with the change; it really is the finest camera I have ever owned or used, even superior to much higher priced DSLR cameras.
