A sad end to a long tradition
I've been a fan since the 70's and have every DVD available (yes, even "The Gunfighters"). But I've just finished the current season on television and you couldn't pay me to watch it again, much less ask me to buy a DVD set of it. The writing is atrocious -- full of plotholes and nonsense -- the acting is bland and uninspired with the single exception of Bradley Walsh (who would make a terrific Doctor), and the cast chemistry is non-existent. Chris Chibnall was determined to change absolutely everything, including the moniker Companion. Now they're the TARDIS "fam". If being a friend was good enough for Sarah Jane and Ace and Donna, it's good enough for anyone else. A lot of people will dismiss all criticisms as the result of the Doctor changing sex. It's not that that I mind so much as, as one very early example, the fact that she falls from space through a train roof and emerges unscathed. What happened to the Doctor madly scrambling into a space suit to survive in "Doctor, Widow, and Wardrobe"? A little continuity wouldn't hurt, now would it? And then there's the constant preaching. Every episode is a sermon to remember to be all-inclusive; every episode wags a finger at us and exhorts us to concentrate on diversity. People get tired of being lectured, especially when they're familiar with a show and character and probably agree with all that stuff anyway. Chibnall took the wrong road and now can't admit it. He's said that he can't do a whole season of Who in one year (I shudder to think what the earlier Doctors would have to say to him about that) and states that it's unfair to a new mum to ask it. Well, Mr. All-Inclusive, what about all the new _dads_? They don't get showrunners standing up for them when the baby's born and insisting on more time off. Chris "My Middle Name is Hypocrisy" Chibnall, you win the John Nathan-Turner Memorial Award for worst showrunner in this century. I loved this show. And fortunately, there are nearly 50 years of DVDs that I can watch instead of the current tripe. Folks, try the new Tom Baker first season blu-ray. The Behind the Sofa segments are worth the price by themselves.
