This is Not the Camera You're Looking For.
I thought that this was going to be a three-star review - my last bullet really speaks to why I now consider this is a one-star purchase. After using the camera for about a week, I felt that it was probably sufficient to merit a mediocre rating. There were an equal number of pros and cons and while this camera didn't fulfill my needs, it was probably close enough. I should mention upfront that my usage case is for home security. I desire a record of any motion in the doorways of my house (indoor). Here's what I noticed in that first week:
As many reviewers have already stated, the sensitivity of the motion detection is way too high. Even when it's set to the lowest level, in a dark or empty room it will constantly upload 90 second movies of "motion". Furthermore, it will incessantly send you notifications about the "motion" that it has detected. This means that in order to maintain sanity and keep your phone from burning down battery, you have to disable notifications - which utterly defeats the purpose of a motion alarm. I shutter to think the tornado-filled room they must have calibrated the motion sensitivities in. Last comment on the topic, their Rapid Recap is cool, but it only proves that the camera is hyper-sensitive. When using Rapid Recap it fails to detect any options of motion even when it recorded dozens of "motion events". Now, in the case of an actual theft, I could probably scroll back to find an intruder, but this camera would be so much more useful if they could do this correctly.
The on-board WiFi would lose my network every other day - even when the router is only in the next room. I should notice that none of my other wireless devices have connectivity issues and they are used much further afield than the camera. Similarly, direct connection to the camera only worked half the time and when it didn't connect it would send the Flir FX back into the default mode where I would have to re-enter the WiFi information. Annoying, but intermittent and I didn't plan on using direct connect.
Final issues that made me conclude that it was probably only a three-star device were some minor nits: no documentation comes with the device and you're left fending for yourself online if it doesn't "just work", lack of a web-based alternative for when you don't have a mobile device handy (I know, rare - but it happens), the inability to disable the bank of IR LEDs pop on when on night mode - glare off of reflective surfaces kills the resulting image, and the extreme limits in response when using intercom.
After a second week, and an exchange with Flir support, this device is solidly a "do not buy" and I will be returning mine. A friend recently bought a competitor's devices for indoor security and has had no issues - totally convincing me that the above problems can be solved, but that Flir doesn't have the will or ability to solve them.
MOST FRUSTRATING: I opened a support ticket contacting their support team to help me with their mobile app. My question was well articulated and to-the-point. I considered it a simple question that I could not find any answer to when looking for documentation or others' experiences online. Instead of answering the ticket, they closed it without a response or resolution. If the company has such little respect for its own customers, then it does not deserve to have any.
This is not the camera you're looking for.
