★★☆☆☆
End of an era.
So I've been buying Refreshers for years now as the only "energy" drink that's reasonably safe. Half a cup of coffee's worth of caffeine, not a lot of sugar, seemed to taste good (except certain flavors), etc.
This is the first time I've gotten the new style cans - and I expected them not to change the mix. From the ingredient stack they didn't, but there is a DEFINITE taste difference. The Strawberry Lemonade has an aftertaste and reminds me of watered down cough syrup. Why? Why did they have to ruin such a good thing? Because it tastes nothing like strawberry OR lemonade, it's not as "light" and crisp, and not nearly as carbonated as the previous version.
The only thing I can see that might explain this is the Nutrition Facts.
There's no more Panax Ginseng (you know, that root that helps memory and the reason I once called it "focus in a can"?), but that wouldn't explain taste.
In the older version you had maybe 2mg of sodium. In this one you've got 45mg. Why? In a fruity drink? Hydration. The body absorbs saline water faster than normal or untreated water (electrolyte water is basically treated water that has higher sodium) and it helps flush toxins from the body, which in theory contributes to energy.
The Vitamin C used to be 100%, here it's 25%. Which seems to imply that either they lowered the ascorbic acid or the fruit juice concentrate. Based on the taste, it wouldn't surprise me if they dropped all of them down to bare basics. Vitamin C, of course, helps strengthen your immune system. Lowering this seems odd, but maybe they were trying to avoid people who would down like 4-5 of these, because one can was already 100% daily value. Too much of it can be dangerous to your system. I'd rather people just be informed about daily value and not overdo it rather than punishing the drink and making it less effective for others.
At this point, and I haven't tested all of them, but I'll have to move on to a different drink, sadly. The taste is deplorable, but I also lament the loss of the good stuff.
