Don't count on capturing crimes on video.
It's cool to see my front door and driveway almost live on my phone while I'm away from home. However, as a security system that will capture and record a crime on video, don't count on it. For instance, sometimes when I'm sent a notification that the cameras detected motion, it doesn't always make a recording as it should. So someone might steal your car from your driveway and you won't have a video of it.
But the most troubling concern is that you may not capture a crime on video because of the ridiculous recording process.
The length of the videos recorded is preset by the user. By default it comes at 10 seconds but the user can change it to 20 seconds, 30, 40, whatever. Let's say we have it preset at 10 seconds.
The way it should've been made to work is that it should start recording as soon as it detects motion and should stop recording 10 seconds after the motion ends. This way, if there are 25 seconds of motion, the video will be 35 seconds long, capturing the full length of motion plus a little after as a buffer.
However, the way the recording process actually works is that it begins recording and counting the 10 seconds about 3+ seconds after it first detects motion (so you'll be losing the first 3+ seconds of motion) and the recording will stop 10 seconds after it begins regardless if there is still motion going on. In other words, if there are 25 seconds of motion, the system will not begin recording until 3+ seconds pass, then it'll record for 10 seconds only, so you will not have the final 12 seconds of the burglary, crime, vandalism captured on video.
Both these programming issues can be fixed with programing updates available through Arlo. Maybe they'll work on it. Until then, If you're looking for a security camera system to record events automatically, I would not recommend this Arlo system. The 3+-second delay in starting to record I don't believe can be fixed.
ADDED NOTE: I'm changing the rating from 2 stars to 1. Six days since I received and installed the system and the batteries are down to 62%. At this rate, I'll be needing to replace the batteries every 3 weeks. Not only are the batteries expensive, but I have to get a ladder to reach the cameras, unscrew them from their mounts, replace the batteries and reposition the cameras. I'll be doing this every 3 weeks? If I hadn't thrown out the packaging, I'd be returning this whole system now. Regarding my previous concerns with the recording process, NETGEAR answered with a non-existent solution.
FINAL UPDATE: Called Amazon and no problem returning the whole kit. Excellent service from Amazon.
