The Tyranny of Living Not To Die :(
The Tyranny of Living Not To Die!!!
I bought this book because of the rave reviews and because of a piece I saw in The Washington Post. I believed it would be a scientifically based sensible approach to an healthy modern diet. BUT IT IS NOT! It is the Keto Diet in disguise.
Fast forward Max's Mom gets Alzheimer's Disease in her late 50s. Max makes it his mission to find a science based diet that will lessen your chances of getting Alzheimer's, or wrinkles, or arthritis, or heart disease, or fat, or anything. AND it will make you HAPPY!!! NOT.
The fact is Max has done his homework. He has poured over a number of studies and spoken with a number of experts. His finding: There are Nine or Ten !?! Superfoods, all the rest must be avoided. His number one Target "processed foods' OK, his number two Target Grains...all grains even whole grains...and you can forget about ever eating Bread Again. Max likes to eat Nutrient Packed Foods like Kale, and Sardines and Anchovies and Wild Salmon and Pork and Berries.....oh, and of course EVOO Extra Virgin Olive Oil, and Avocados, and Nuts. (I think that covers it)
So, there you have it. Max has done a film / documentary called "Bread Head" apparently bread and grains in general - (nope, brown rice won't save you - Steel Cut Oats Neither) will give you BREAD HEAD or BRAIN FOG.
Listen, I am normal weight and I eat No Processed Foods or Sodas. I was just looking for a tune up for my existing diet; not a KETO transformation. Max actually writes that he travels the world with cans of Sardines and Anchovies - a great "pick me up."
And thus I come to the tyranny of Eating Not To Die. I like bread, and I do not like Anchovies. I want to enjoy my meals. And I believe I can eat selectively to manage my weight and my health; but I am not going to these extremes. Yes, I agree Grass Fed Beef is healthier than what we find in the Supermarket. And I believe that Americans consume too much Sugar and Processed Foods. I am on board with getting enough sleep and getting exercise. But I don't believe whole grain bread is going to lead to Alzheimer's disease...and if it does.....may-be it was worth it. Planning meals Each and Every Day so that we can look like we're 20 well into middle age ????? No Thanks. Where in the world do all those rave reviews come from ?!?!?
