Great Psychological Thriller
Wow, I just finished this book and it had me enthralled throughout. I think many of the other reviewers are too cynical. People with PTSD often pop Xanax like it's candy and Seratonin beta-blockers are not pain killers, they're for stress and depression. And, for those critical of Special Agent Prusik being assigned to this case, it was not a serial murder case in the beginning, it was one murder that then spiraled into serial murders. Should she not have had an affair with her boss? Oh, if hindsight weren't always perfect! How many of us can say the same thing...it just makes her more human. I've read my share of thrillers but to combine cultural anthropology (one of my interests) with research on the "twining" of identical twins (another one of my interests) was over the top and done well plus I didn't even know the book addressed either until I started reading it. We all think we have all the answers to the "genetic" versus "environmental" impact on people in general and deviant behavior in particular and this author tackles them head on without coming up with trite conclusions. Maybe it's like most things in life, some of each is involved. I liked Special Agent Prusik and thought for a change in a novel she was portrayed as a gutsy, take chances when you know you're right Special Agent that we would all want on our side. But, she wasn't robotic, she had a human side that made her a little vulnerable and very likeable. The plot was full of twists and turns and and unlike one of the reviewers, I didn't suspect how it was going to turn out until well into the book. Oh, and I liked the Sheriff too! All in all it was one of the best thrillers I've read for a while. Congrats to the author on a fine first novel!
