First impressions and some thoughts on construction
I had originally considered a $50 name brand hammock, until I came across this cheap hammock with good reviews. I ordered the base hammock for ten bucks without the tree hardware. These kinds of hammocks are pretty simple in construction, and my initial impressions are quite good. The hammock seems well made, and easily packs up tightly in a small stuff sack sewn into the side. Fabric is thin but feels strong. It feels silky, like parachute material. There are no tags on the hammock showing the actual fabric or fabric weight. There is single stitching along the sides of the hammock, and triple stitching on the ends that bear weight.
Speaking of weight, specs are pretty hard to find on this item. My complete hammock in the pouch weighs exactly 14.4 ounces. That includes two heavy steel carbiners on each end that weigh 1.4 ounces each. Backpackers who are serious about weight reduction could replace the steel hardware with rope and shave another couple ounces off. (See the photos I uploaded for a better idea of how the hammock is made).
Overall, I believe this hammock is a bargain. I saw a very similar hammock on the shelf at Wal-mart this week for $25 plus tax, and the $50+ hammocks I've seen on Amazon are very similar. For the price, it's a no brainer.
