I have found this machine to be both compact and well made. Mostly metal, there are a few plastic bits, but I don't think these would cause future problems. It's FAST- super fast. It zips through heavy weight fabrics with ease. I am pleased with the simple, but useful array of stitches (my other machines offer more stitches, but I rarely use them). This machine is stable and does not bounce (I have returned other machines that bounce when used). I think the light could be vastly improved -- it is way too dim. I prefer the LCD light on my other machines. All and all, I would buy this machine again and recommend to other crafters. UPDATE: I have now been using this machine for several weeks. I'm very impressed-- the speed is fabulous-- note, this may be too fast for people new to sewing. Good thing Singer added a finger guard (which gets in the way a bit, but I'm sure I would have otherwise sewn through my fingers by now). Most recently, I have enjoyed how effortlessly it zipps through thick fabrics - amazing!
