Quite the bike
In 5 years of working as a bike messenger in Minneapolis, I've ridden all kinds of bikes, in all kinds of weather. I've ridden walmart mountain bikes, 80's classic steel road bikes, kitted out Treks, pretty much everything EXCEPT for fat tire bikes. Such wide tires always seemed... too much. No need for a bike that only makes itself worthwhile maybe two months out of the year, I thought.
This bike changes that dynamic. It gives all the benefits without any of the negatives. If you don't want to read any further, just know this: this bike is fun as hell
The Cons:
1. It's bad on ice. Very bad. Studded tires might solve the problem but after crashing the bike within 4 blocks of my first ride and bending the crank, I figure it's just safer to simply avoid all ice.
2. Both brake rotors were warped on arrival. Could have happened during shipping and I haven't talked to EGO about it yet, but I got the rear working and the front will just have to wait for some time in the shop.
3. The controls are basic, incredibly so. Basically 3 buttons and some LEDs. No way to change the top speed and no way to see what kind of power you're drawing from the motor. It works well enough though and I haven't had any real issues.
4. The first two assist settings are way too low. If you're at all like me you're only going to be using the highest level of assist.
The Pros:
1. This bike is fun as hell. Did I already say that? It accelerates smoothly and quickly and even though I wish the top speed was a bit higher it's still enough to do the trick.
2. It's surprisingly well made. I've only used it for 2 weeks but I've put over 200 miles on it already and it seems basically good as new. The breaks are loose due to the warped rotors but it isn't a gamebreaker and the matte black finish seems to resist damage much better than I had expected.
3. The battery lasts for ~25 miles on the highest setting, although subzero temps seem to greatly diminish that. This was expected though so I can't complain. I'll probably end up ordering another battery since a busy day for me can sometimes hit 50+ miles. Everything's worked out well so far but the first day I get without a break I'll probably end up having to ride the bike like a peasant again for an hour or two while I charge the battery somewhere.
It's just so damn nice knowing as long as I can keep turning the pedals the bike will take care of the rest of and take me practically anywhere. Big hill right before I get home? No problem. Packed and rutted snow? Piece of cake.
Long story short, this bike should cost twice as much as it does. If it looks like fun to you, buy it.
Oh and I almost forgot to mention: I'm 6'2" if I stretch with a 32" inseam and I'm definitely at the tall end for this bike. Anyone over 6'4" or under 5'8" will probably be pushing it.
UPDATE: So I crashed this bike into the side of a bus at full speed a couple of weeks ago. Don't ask me why though cause I don't remember a damn thing. I broke my shoulder and a few ribs, collapsed a lung, and basically turned half my body into a horrible bruise.
The BIKE however... is perfectly fine. I can't really figure it out. I don't remember the accident, but I've seen the camera footage from inside the bus, which means I saw myself ride this bike straight thru the front door of the bus and then rebound a good 10 feet. Me=wrecked Bike=fine. I mean it didn't even pop the front tire... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
