Colors change when baked
I used these markers to make DIY mugs; I made a ton of them as Christmas gifts this year. Something that's definitely a need-to-know is that the colors change when baked onto porcelain (**SEE UPDATE**). The most noticeable changes were that the bright red became maroon and the sky blue became pale green...? It didn't ruin the mugs, it was just a bit weird. Especially the blue one. If you're particular about how the color will turn out, do a test first. The marker has stayed on pretty well, but I also baked them at 420º because I heard that works better for longevity, and they haven't had that many washes yet. I'll update later. UPDATE: Six months in, the mugs still haven't had their colors wash away, and I've been told that they have been accidentally put in the dishwasher more than a few times. I received a tip from a potter that 400º is much too hot for colors such as sky blue to remain intact, and advised me to bake the mugs at 350º instead. That person was absolutely right, and in the last batch I made, the colors are much more vivid and I had less color changing. So, lesson learned! Keep the temperature down to 350º if color is important. I will update in the future to verify that colors stay put after being baked at this lower temperature.
