This is the one
This is the one. Unfortunately, I'm a bit obsessive about design, and I tried four different manual frothers before landing on the Bodum. Each of the other designs lacked one or more of the qualities the Bodum has in spades. I had one from Norpro that had a plastic ring on the bottom, and it broke after only a couple of uses. I'm not a bull in a china shop, either, the ring was garbage. I got one of those wand frothers and immediately realized it was also poorly made, and it required batteries, was very fragile, blah, blah, blah--not for me. I had high hopes for the Vktech, stainless steel frother, but found not being able to pop it into a microwave was more inconvenient than expected. What's more, when frothing, you can't see what is going on inside, so you have to keep looking (and spilling) milk. I wanted this to be the one, because of how tough it was, but those features ruled it out. I finally landed on the Bodum and have been extremely happy with it. Can I microwave it? Check. Can I see my milk while frothing? Check. Does it actually make good froth? Oh yeah, check. This thing does its job very well and is simple. The paddle inside is plastic, but I can't imagine needing to replace it for quite a while.
Tip: when frothing with this, be sure to "slap" the top of the milk with the paddle, pushing air into the milk, rather than leaving it inside the milk and merely churning. Do it right and you'll have about as good a frother as one could hope for.
