This mat is big enough to cool my GSD's belly, but not quite large enough for his entire body. The gel cools nicely, especially great for these hot Florida days. I have used the pad on the floor alone and on top of an orthopedic bed and our boy seems to prefer the latter. Be careful not to walk across the pad, as the gel will shift and you will slide...this doesn't seem to happen as much when placed on top of another bed, which might be why our older Sheppard prefers it this way. The pad isn't very thick, but it doesn't need to be, as it cools efficiently and is way better than just the hard floor. It is well made and easy to clean. I would definitely recommend this item for anyone needing a cool place for their pawed friend to chill.
