It took patience, but they started using it eventually
It took our cats over two weeks to start using it. If your kitty walks away, I suggest allowing some time.
We have two cats, one ravenous eater (due to medications) and one occasional browser. I was hoping that this gadget would allow us to leave dry food out for our browser, who is younger and more active, without having the gobbler eat it all up quickly.
When we put their regular dry food in it, the cats sniffed it for a while, then walked away. We tried putting a few treats in the tubes, but they couldn't figure it out. The gobbler tried licking inside the tubes, then lost interest. We even tried poking each kitty's paw into the wells, but of course their reaction is that this is a form of assault, and they fled for their safety.
Two things helped. 1) One other reviewer mentioned removing the tubes, and just using the "wells" that are formed into the base to get them started. This helped a lot because the cats can see the food inside the hole.
2) Give the kitties more incentive: put some treats that they really like in the wells.
After this they became more motivated, and the fun began. First our younger browser figured out the trick. He would fish out a treat by whisking his paw down into the hole, and the treat would fly up. More often than not it would land in a different well. Sometimes it would fall on the floor, and then he'd get his reward.
Our gobbler saw him being successful, and would sit nearby and shamelessly poach anything that landed within darting range. Eventually Mr. gobbler figured out the rules and began fishing out his own goodies. He figured out how to cup his paw to bring a kibble up to his mouth, and didn't have to share. So the food supply began vanishing quickly.
Now we've tried inserting the inner cups, starting with the larger two. Mr. gobbler has gotten the hang of those as well. So we may not have solved the problem for our occasional browser, but we are being entertained. And Mr. gobbler seems to want all of his food served in the new toy.
