Passport Drive Recovery
Since the Passport drives became available I have had 6 to 10 of them in frequent use as backup and moving large databases over many years. Yes, several have failed seemingly just out of warranty. I kept them as the only alternative to hammering them to bits. A couple years ago, I tore one apart, finding a normal 2.5" SATA drive inside, I connected it via a drive cloning product and it was perfectly good. Repeating the process for several failed Passports, I obtained the same results. It was the tiny SATA to USB interface card that had failed in all instances. I recovered data and performed the same for friends with failed Passports. Early this year, I found that 2.5" drive housings similar to Passports were now available with USB2 out for around $7 and USB3 for under $10. I have restored over a dozen drives to full service as USB2 & 3 for a pittance of replacement cost. They surely exist, but I have yet to encounter a bad WD 2.5" drive from a failed Passport. Not only does this recover the data, but for less than $10, a fully functional drive of almost any size is a bargain. I give the Passport 5 stars because they so rarely have a problem, and when they do, there is a high probability that the data and the internal; drive is recoverable.
