The Better Comb--Hartz v. Safari!
We purchased both the Hartz and the Safari flea combs. The two are very close in quality and effectiveness. The Hartz has the rubber handle, and is a little bit larger, with a longer row of teeth. The Safari, on the other hand, has a double row of teeth. Between the two, the Hartz feels a tiny bit nicer in your hand. Both catch flea and debris. The double row of the Safari comb has an extra advantage—fleas will get caught between the two rows of teeth. They can be difficult to extract, but they are pretty caught in there, and drowning them is easy. This can be important because if the comb has not built up a bit of pet hair in the teeth yet, the fleas have a habit of jumping off the comb once they are brushed out of the pet. But if some hair has built up first, they will try to navigate that layer of hair to wedge into. Thus with the Hartz, on the first 1-2 strokes, fleas that are caught might just jump off the comb. With the Safari double row however, they will often get combed into the area between the rows of teeth, or try to wedge their way into there. As a result, because catching the fleas is the most important aspect, and the Safari can yield a few more at the beginning of the brushing, we are giving it the top honors. Having said that, both do their job well, and are a good purchase.
