A very happy Mac user
I'm a Mac user. I'm by no means a tech savvy person but I can manage pretty well. Thanks to the reviews here, I knew I had to do something to make sure the disk worked properly on my Mac. If you're so inclined, you can simply connect the drive to your Mac, find the Mac folder in it, follow the instructions, and install the little application that comes with the disk. One of the reviewers mentioned simply using Disk Utility to format the drive and that's what I did: 1) connect the drive using the USB 3.0 cable included in the package; 2) open up Disk Utility app on the Mac (use Spotlight if you don't know where to find it or even what it is); 3) select the mounted partition of the drive (this is a jargon you don't need to understand, just select the nested TOSHIBAEXT under the external drive listing on the left); 4) Go to Erase, select the "Mac OS Extended (Case-sensitive, Journaled)" format in the dropdown, then click "Erase". I ejected and reconnected the cable before I actually started using it just in case. As the reviewer mentioned, this simply cleans out the drive meaning you lose whatever application/installer/instructions that came with it. I'm not planning to use this disk on a Windows machine at all and all my Mac machines are updated to the latest OS X versions so I'm not losing anything by doing this. But if you need to partition, or use it in a manner any more complicated than mine, I can't tell you this will work fine for you. But it's worked out brilliantly for me. If you care about this sort of thing (and I absolutely do) - I got the glossy white one and it comes with the white cable. I was anxious about getting a black cable more than a normal person should be. :) The pictures available on this product page and online are pretty crappy. It's glossy but not gaudy. The Toshiba logotype is a subtle silver though it appears much darker in some pictures. I debated in my head between the white gold and glossy white and, though the white gold would have looked pretty seamless with my Mac products, I'm actually glad I got the white. It's such a cute little thing! My Macs have USB 3.0 ports so the circular LED indicator lights up in blue. I believe it lights up in white if the connection is via USB 2.0. It's overall extremely pleasing in terms of aesthetics. Again, that sort of thing is important to me but most people would not care as much as I do. I've moved all my large folders to this one in order to reduce the size my main user account on one of my Macs that I had to migrate and consolidate into another machine. This will depend on many other factors but just to provide some reference points, moving a folder of 315GB took a little over an hour. The drive became a teeny bit warm during the time but nothing alarming. It's super quiet, as well. I really can't be happier. The only sliver of doubt or regret (if you can even call it that) is getting the 1TB one. But all I need to use it for currently fits well within the 1TB capacity, and 2 or 3TB would have meant the disk being thicker so I think I'm gonna stick with this. By the time I need another one or a larger capacity drive, hopefully they'll make them even smaller, thinner, nicer, and faster. :)
