This distinctive approach to the superhero myth may not appeal to everybody
Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (4K Ultra HD) UPDATE: Amazon has added a note to the product page that addresses the fact that the 4kUHD bundle only contains the Ultimate cut on the 4k disc not the blu ray. I really enjoyed this movie. I didn't get a chance to see it in the theaters, so i have very little to base the comparison, except to say that this long cut makes me think "what are the critics talking about? this is pretty good!". The movie is a bit on the gloomy and thoughtful side, but I don't mind that. I think a little variety is good for viewers, and not all topics have to be approached with a singularly formulaic approach. I don't think that the fact that it isn't like the Avengers movies is a negative, and it's definitely not a sophisticated criticism. it's like saying; "this burger tastes nothing like the hot dog i had last week, so it is garbage". Not everyone may be a fan of the deconstructed superhero myth, but there's no denying that it is a distinctive approach. While pacing and editing issues are objective complaints, complaining about your affinity about the subject matter is a purely subjective thing, and i don't think filmmakers should be bashed for taking a risk with something different. The music is soaring, and sad, and energetic and glum, Hans Zimmer has outdone himself in what could be his last film score ever (To be determined). Visually, the movie is grand and has an almost painted quality, some heavy handed slow-mo scenes are still quite beautiful and captivating. Ben Affleck makes an excellent Batman, Jeremy Irons is an adequately dour and sarcastic Alfred. Lex Luthor is too Zuckerbergian and fidgety to be taken seriously most of the time, but occasionally something is unnerving about him, and yes, without revealing too much; the climactic battle between the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel ends on an eye-rollingly over-acted point, but it does makes some sense. The movie makes the 2 oldest and most well-known superheroes in modern history, unpredictable and slightly unfamiliar. I REALLY liked that... but therein lies the problem with superhero movies and comic book fans in general, being one myself, I know that we don't take too kindly to change. We are quick to cement opinions based on very little information which becomes intractable later. We make eternal comparisons to generations old understandings of superheroes (for the longest time, I believed that if superman wasn't Christopher Reeves he sucked). Mainly, if this doesn't fall in line with how I formed a picture in my head a long long time ago, then i don't like it. And there's no blame for that; heroes are inherently personal, because we pour our own souls into them and vice-versa, they are what we want to be. But sometimes, when we don't like the reflection, we break the mirror.
