It's been good for driving in the SF Bay area
I just bought it last week and I'm back out this week trying it out. The construction of the unit is good. The speaker is more than adequate. The display looks good. Much better than the display on my Delz 560. It took a bit of tapping to get to know where things are at but it can only get easier as time goes on.
The problem I've experienced was a routing problem. It seems to route to locations accurately but when I want to add in a stop such as a truck stop I get a rather serious problem. I was heading east on I80 in Nevada. I wanted to stop at the Pilot in Carlin. So I search for it using the category "along active route" and used the Truck Locations (TD) icon. I see the stops show and I see the label band showing the exit number I want which was correct. However the body of the message had instructions for another truck stop that was before the Carlin exit. The directions were going to take me to the exit for Battle Mountain even though the label band said I was going to exit (280) for Carlin. It did it again when I tried to pick Wendover which is exit 410. The message under the label had directions stopping at Petro in Wells which is exit 352. Luckily I know this part of I80 to have seen this problem. If I search for the truck stops by choosing the category "Where I am at now" everything will work correctly. The label band and the directions match.
Another problem is that when I touch the mileage note that tells me how many miles to the next turn. A picture pops up showing the miles, amount of time to the turn and a picture of the turn. The picture doesn't go back to the main map screen. I have to touch the return arrow.
With my old Dezl 560 the picture of the turn with shut off within a few seconds.
Right now I will continue to use this GPS but I can fall back to my Dezl 560. Fix the problems and this GPS would be very good. I will update if the problems are fixed or I find others.
MARCH 27: The unit can crash. I was using voice command to search for addresses. I got the message "can't calculate route" and then it crashed. I wonder if the memory was getting full? Just like on my old unit to clear memory I would flush the memory by unplugging and then shut it off. Both units work worked properly after doing this.
April 20: Well I've been using this for a month now. The routing that this unit calculates is not bad. It took a better route to a Pilot at Troy, IL. Instead of taking me through St. Louis to reach the Pilot the unit took the bypass to reach the Pilot. However on balance this unit has also took round about ways to other stops. The worst case was when I set the destination for a Pilot at Perrysburg, OH off of I-80. It wanted me to drive around for a couple of miles before finally reaching Pilot. When I first reached the Pilot at the intersection lights the Pilot was immediately to my left but the route it wanted to go was down the road a couple of miles. Another time when trying to reach the Pilot at Winnemucca, NV it had me driving past the Pilot and then come back to Pilot. I don't remember which locations now but it happened a couple of other times as I saw the signs giving me the exit number to reach a truck stop but the unit wanted me to drive pass it or before it to reach the truck stop.
However, the plus side of this unit is the "Voice Command" feature. Great to be able to do many functions without having to bend forward to use the GPS. Overall I like it. The routing was generally good but those truck stops with all the driving around needs to go. So now I will give it another star to raise it to three stars. We'll see if Garmin can improve the routing.
May 20: It would be remiss of me to not mention that the GPS has guided me through the Los Angeles and Denver area very well. It alerts me to which lane I should be in so I can get onto the correct flyover or off ramp. A animated picture/video of the lane appears and it clearly shows which lane I should be in. So far it hasn't been wrong. On the other hand I don't understand why in more than a few instances. The freeway splits into two directions and the GPS doesn't tell me which way to follow. It's nice to have a reminder. I just had a system update today so I will get to see what improvements have been done. One more thing. A couple of times when I woke up to get ready to take off the GPS was trying to acquire a satellite signal. I had to restart it 2 or 3 times before it would acquire a signal. I noticed that I had the Bluetooth on overnight so I turned the Bluetooth off. This seem to fixed that problem. I haven't had that problem since shutting the Bluetooth off before going to sleep. Hopefully with the upgrade the will fix the reboot problem when doing several address searches in a row.
June 26: Well the crashing stills happens when I do several searches in a row. It happens when I'm trying to decide where to stop. I might choose one stop but when I search for what restaurants are nearby and I don't like any of them I do another search for my stop. It takes several searches before the unit crashes and then reboots. I noticed when I want to take a look at the next turn that is shown on the display it changes the map view to a view of the upcoming turn. The problem is that the picture stays on the view of the upcoming turn and doesn't switch back to the original map view. This needs to be fixed so that the display changes back to the map view after a few seconds. This will save the drivers from having to lean forward to reach the screen so drivers don't have to touch the return arrow icon to get back to the map view.
July 3,2915: after the update the GPS doesn't show my history. Before it would draw a line as to where I've been. Now it doesn't work. Also at times when I use the voice command to adjust brightness it doesn't show the numbers on the screen. At least when I see the numbers I can adjust brightness by tapping if the voice command doesn't listen.
July 17: Bad crash today. The voice was about to give directions for turn off when the voice got stuck in a rapid stuttering mode. Sounded similar to a DJ working a couple of discs. The screen contined to work at least. Had to unplugg the unit to make it stop. Second time this has happen to me.
Sept 16,2015: I did a software update. I can say that they haven't fix the Travel history function. It doesn't draw a line as on where I have traveled. It's useful as sometimes I use it to reverse my to get of a location at times. Serious problem on the map. Going north on I-5 in Oregon it doesn't like a portion of I-5. The GPS tells me that trailers aren't allowed on I-5. Routes me around over 200 miles extra. Not good.
Nov 29 it still routes the wrong way going north on I-5. I see the message that trailers aren't allowed from exit 19 and then for the next 10 miles. The "detour" starts back at Weed,CA. It will be a trip through the mountains of Ca and OR. I wonder who did the mapping for this.
Dec 24: Over this GPS is nice. Looking at the errors in routing may be primarily due to the who ever did the mapping. I've set the weight at 5000 lbs and the routing improved. But the bad thing is that Garmin has lost the feature the drew a line where the vehicle had traveled. I see the check boxes for it to turn on but it still doesn't work. The problem with pop up picture when touching the upper left hand corner for the miles to the next turn the pop up picture still stays there. I have to reach forward again to get rid of the pop up picture. Before on my old GPS the pop up picture would close on its own within a couple seconds. The GPS still crashes after doing several searches. I wonder if Garmin tests this by searching for different stops along the route. Often times I need distances to judge driving time and or see what restaurant is at the stop. Right now I will leave it at 2 stars as I am still finding routing errors and these are the ones where I know the route. That crashing needs to be fixed.
June 14, 2016 After another month of use. The unit does still crash at times. That's from after several searches. If I don't shut it down and restart daily I am taking a chance with having a crash. I was trying to use the IFTA app and I found that the app can't delete the trips/stops being made. It used to work. At some point a update killed that function. This last month I had more drive arounds when trying to reach a fuel stop. The unit might drive an extra 3 to 10 miles to reach a fuel stop. The road it doesn't like would often be the road right under the interstate I pulled off of. One very bad drive around is when I'm going west on I95 near exit 40 in Connecticut. It tells me that there is a low bridge ahead. I see a sign for for a low bridge but it's for a off ramp. Same problem again going south on I95 in New Jersey. It finally stops doing it at mile marker 96. Same problem with running into a low bridge. Another new one I found was going west on I76 near mile marker 67. Apparently there is suppose to be a 12-8 bridge. Maybe the persons doing the mapping reach the sign for the shoulders which can be too low. Over I like the Dezl 770. I see good features that can make it a very good GPS. Right now someone needs to needs to do a quality control audit of the maps. It seems like the algorithm of the software is following rules to calculate routes. But problem with that is that the maps have to be right. Over all like it but it needs improvements. I want to like it. I would like the use the trip history function where it leaves a line on the route but it hasn't worked after one update. They need to repair the IFTA app so one can delete past trips. Most of all someone needs to do a quality control audit of the maps. At times I wished google would offer a GPS. I see google cars that are driving around mapping roads fairly often.
Sept 24, 2016: Garmin is making steady improvements. They have cleared up a few of the road problems where the GPS takes a long route around some problem on the road. The one on I-5 going north through Oregon is finally fixed. There are a couple of others back in Connecticut and New Jersey but I haven't been through there in a while. Sometimes the GPS takes a bad route that can send me driving an extra 10 to reach locations. This seems to happen in rural areas There was one route in Missouri and another in Alabama that had me driving about 10 miles out of my way to reach a destination. But by paying attention and using google maps I can cut down on bad routing. It does it right most of the times. The problem seems to be the GPS often times wants to hurry up and take a earlier exit to reach some locations. The feature where it shows which exit to take is a very nice feature and how it point which lane I should be in for a upcoming exit. The last software update didn't address the problem with fixing the IFTA app. I still can't delete old mileage and stop locations. It will say it is deleted say the 1st quarter for 2016. All the mileage vanishes but it recreates the mileage right in front of me.
Aug 31, 2017. Many issues have been fixed. At least when it crashes it just reboots now. Before it would crash by being in a stuck mode of making a weird sound like a broken record repeating and the screen is scrambled. It wouldn't stop until it was unplugged as the on/off switch was also locked. I hope this reboot it did today is a solution. It reboots quicker. I noticed now the route picked has changed. For example I was going east on US58 going towards I-40 E. the route it used to take of driving all the way to I-40 is the better route. The new route wants to drive into Barstow a bit before getting onto I-40. I say it needs to avoid city traffic and when I drove the usual way straight to I-40 it actually took a couple of minutes off of the time to reach the destination. Something has changed in some past update. I noticed at times in planning a route it seems to find to the earliest exit off of a freeway or major road. . I'm not sure if it is the fastest route as often times using a route from my company that route is better. The consistent thing is the route from the GPS turns off the highway earlier. I wonder if the Garmin route accounts for the speed of the roadway into it's calculation for calculating the fastest route. One can't assume they are.
Nov 11, 2017: it has been routing me with U-turns lately. I have the box checked to avoid U-turns and yet it still happens at times. Trying to do a U-turn in a truck can be impossible and unsafe often times. This is a big fault. I have to check the route to make sure there aren’t any U-turns. I have to knock it down to 2 stars for this. If there is anything to avoid, it is U-turns.
Feb 27, 2018- Well, I've quit doing OTR driving. Now I've been using it in the SF Bay Area and in the central valley of California. It's been working perfectly for me now. Doing runs for a big and well know warehouse store. So far it has taken me on the correct routes even near a couple of stores that are close to SF International airport. It hasn't asked me to do any dangerous and illegal uturns. Before I was in the Denver area and it wanted me to do uturns which were impossible to do due to traffic and the road conditions. I'm giving it 4 stars for taking me around the Bay Area and the central valley of California correctly.
