innovative recipes and great pictures
I haven't bought a big, fat basic cookbook in years, but I saw an intriguing preview of this new edition in the BH&G magazine, so I ordered it. I'm surprised at all the negative reviews because of the way it looks. Seems to me that the content might be a little more important. There is a decent selection of old standby recipes (scalloped potatoes, pot roast, meat loaf, snickerdoodles) and also a whole bunch of more contemporary ones (banh mi sandwiches, flatbread pizzas, fattoush salad, 40 pages of meatless main dishes), and almost every page has a gorgeous photo on it. For the record, the last BH&G cookbook I bought was 20 years ago, so I can't compare it to a recent version. There are also a bunch of handy charts and cooking tips, and many recipes have creative ideas for variations. I'm impressed, and I'm looking forward to cooking with it. Several reviewers have complained that it doesn't come in a binder format, but personally I wouldn't want it to-- the binder would make it bulkier and heavier, and easier for the pages to pull out.
