Classic Brands vs Tempur-pedic: battle of the adjustable bed
I own a top-of-the-line Tempur-pedic adjustable base, but they are not cheap, so what if you want the benefit of an adjustable bed without the price tag? Is Classic Brands a good alternative?
SET-UP: The bed arrives in a box that is about half the size of the bed itself. You assemble the bed by attaching the legs, the two halves and the two motors to the bed. From there, you plug it in and go. It was fairly straight-forward, through it took some muscle to heft the pieces around, so I would recommend someone strong to help (or do) the assembly. I managed it myself, but it would have been easier with a partner, and it took my about 45 minutes.
The bed raises both the head and the legs using a wired remote that hooks onto the side of the frame. The frame itself is designed (like the Tempur-pedic) to fit inside a standard bed frame, and this did fit inside the bed frame I've been using for years (the twin xl is half of a king, so it fit in half of my existing bed frame, with my Tempur-pedic base on the other side of the bed).
So how does it compare to the Tempur-pedic?
Use: When it comes to raising and lower, the effect is exactly the same: the bed lifts comfortably at the head and feed. It is a little noisier than the Tempur-Pedic an it isn't quite as smooth. With the Tempur-Pedic, sometimes I can't even tell it is moving, that's how smooth and quiet it is. But once you are in place, both are equally as sturdy and comfortable.
Control: The Classic Brands control is very basic: up, down, head, foot, both. My Tempur-Pedic can only lift the foot or the head at a time, not both, while the Classic Brands can do both at once. It is definitely faster than the Tempur-Pedic at getting into place. The Tempur-Pedic remote, however, is far superior. It lights up when you pick it up, it is wireless, and it has the option to press "flat" and the bed will return to a flat position. It also had 4 position memories, so you can easily get into your favorite sleeping or sitting position. You have to hold the Classic Brands button down as it moves - you can't just press a button and let it do it's thing, like you can with the Tempur-Pedic. So when it comes to control, Classic Brands does the job, but Tempur-Pedic is definitely superior. You don't realize how handy it is to have the "flat" option until you try to make your bed every morning while having to stand and hold the button for it the bed to get in place.
The Tempur-Pedic is a far superior bed, from the manufacturing to the parts, but the Classic Brands will do the same job, is well made, and once you cover them in a mattress and bedding, can you even tell the difference? I will update this review if we start having trouble with either of the bed's motors, but I have no reason to think that one is better than the other, except that Tempur-pedic has a reputation for quality manufacturing.
I know it isn't fair to compare the two, since they are in completely different price classes. But if you are like me, you want to know what you are getting for that extra money, and whether it is worth it. The bottom line is that the Classic Brands will do the basic job every bit as good as the Tempur-Pedic. If you just want a bed that will lift your head or legs for a more comfortable working/sleeping/reading/tv watching position, there is absolutely no reason to spend more. Classic Brands is every bit as good as Tempur-Pedic in that way. For an extra $1000 you can get the Tempur-Pedic, which will give you a better, more convenient remote and a smoother, quieter ride (the top-end Tempur-Pedic also has massage. Don't buy it for the massage - it is a novelty). It all depends on what it is important to you.
