Good at-home testing option: A Review from a laboratorian
I was able to use this on my iPhone 12 Pro Max without any issues what so ever. Keep in mind, part of this test is that your phone acts as a reader of the test, so you don't have to play this game (like you might have to do with BinaxNow) of a shadow line, and then you start seeing things that aren't actually there. Pros: Easy to administer, the application keeps a log of all of your test per profile, and it does the reading for you. Con: For repeat testing, this is a pain as you have to watch all of the video's again if you want to repeat test. So it is a time process. Also, almost ALL rapid antigen tests use one line as a control and one line for a positive results, that IS NOT the case here. A negative result actually has two lines (not sure what a positive will look like since I am not positive), so you may have this induced panic when you see two lines and may not want to actually use your phone to read the results. This was a major misstep on BD's part (in my opinion) as it deviates what we all know from the BinaxNow, QuickVue, etc. Another con (maybe) is that BD with the application reports all results to your local public health agency. This is great for public health, but can cause headaches and retesting if positive. Bottom line - this is a good quality test and the reporting (from a public health laboratorian) is great, but from the patient side, may not be desired. The two lines is misleading, let your phone do the reading and don't try to guess your result. Final note: If you have been vaccinated, this test will NOT cross react (as one reviewer stated). This test is looking for the nucleocapsid protein of the virus, all vaccines use the spike protein, so no issues there. Also, if you have recently recovered, these rapid antigen tests will be the first to go negative (versus molecular, PCR, assays). So no need to worry about throwing a false-positive as it doesn't linger. Picture: Negatively read BD Veritor test cartridges.
