So Nice, I Ordered It Twice. Literally.
I have allergies, so when it comes to the air I breathe, I take it seriously. I will admit I have been a fan of Honeywell for their air filters for some time, but when it came time to get a serious HEPA air filter, I did some serious research. To my nearly complete lack of surprise, for my purposes and price range, the Honeywell HPA300 was consistently falling into the number 1 spot. So I decided to go for it. I ordered my HPA300 unit from Amazon and it arrived swiftly, as expected.
Setting it up was as easy as expected. Remove the filters from their placements inside the air filter. Remove them from their packaging, and place them back in. Turn on the unit, set it to the level you desire, and let it do the rest. It couldn't be easier. I turned it on to the highest setting (not including Turbo), and found myself very pleased with how quiet it was, but also how pleasant the white noise it was emitting was as well. The airflow seems quite adequate, and I noticed that my late summer into fall coughing and sneezing had subsided quite a bit. Once again, I found myself to be a proud Honeywell owner.
However, I realized one day after purchasing my first unit that I had calculated the size of my place vs the coverage offered by the HPA300 (which already seemed quite generous) incorrectly. Also, since I was so pleased with the first air filter, I decided to to go "all out" and buy a second identical unit for my bedroom. All the positive things I have said about the first unit I ordered apply to the second one as well once I received it.
Also the dimmer feature is FANTASTIC for the bedroom. In my main living area, I just keep the light on normal. However in the bedroom, I like complete darkness whenever possible, and the dimmer button allows me just that. Still the same great performance, no bright blue light keeping me up.
In summary this thing is built with the quality that I have come to expect from Honeywell. It was easy to unbox and setup, and I love the pre-filter they worked in before the air gets to the actual main filters to keep them running more efficiently for longer. It is also super easy to get to the filters with the simple latched front panel design they worked into this unit.
My only gripe with this unit is not a problem with it, but more so with Honeywell. Their filter and pre-filter replacement options pricey and can make it more painful to replace the filters (mainly the pre-filter than should be necessary. I have managed to make this a non issue by purchasing a third-party filter and pre-filter replacement kit. It offers the same performance as the name brand filters for a cheaper price. Even better yet, the one I purchased comes with the three main filters that they recommend you change annually, but also 4 of the pre-filters cut to the exact size you need, so I am covered for a year, no mess and no fuss. Honeywell on the other hand sells pre-filters you have to custom cut to size and it's just not worth my time or energy.
Long story short, if you are looking for an HEPA air filter that looks good, works well, and will likely last you a long time, buy this one (or if you're like me, two). However when it comes to replacement filters, do a little "comparison shopping" and save yourself the hassle.
