My Family Got CO Poisoning Previously...So We Bought This
After my family was diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning (long term at low rates over a period of a couple of years, resulting in several ER trips and doctor visits before diagnosis), I did a TON of research on carbon monoxide detectors. We had a generic detector previously that NEVER sounded! I found out that regulations are relatively loose on detectors...so I was picky about what I replaced it with. Once the problem with our furnace was identified and we had the unit replaced, we ordered this CO detector. I take comfort in knowing that every night, I can push the "peak level" button and see what the highest level has been (as low as 11 ppm). What you need to know about CO detectors: They are not created equal!! Regulations do not require a CO alarm to go off if there is CO in the air unless it reaches a certain level and REMAINS there for a certain amount of time. While the alarm may not sound on this unit when levels reach 11 ppm, it will tell you when you check if it has EVER reached 11 ppm. After what we just lived through, that's a worthwhile investment. Limits should not be above 5 - 9 ppm for living areas (depending on the health authority you ask). So it only makes sense to have a unit that will tell you when levels reach even slightly above that.
